SHORT BIOGRAPHY OF MILTON BENNETT: Co-founder and a director of the Intercultural Communication Institute in Portand, Oregon, his native state, Bennett also taught communication theory and intercultural communication for 15 years at Portland State University. Subsequently he became a trainer and consultant in domestic and global diversity for university faculty, corporate managers and executives, and other clients in the public and private sectors. His contribution to intercultural theory includes the creation of the Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity (DMIS: see his Basic Concepts of Intercultural Communication) and the co-development of a tool to measure it, the Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI). He co-edited and contributed to the 3rd edition of the Handbook of Intercultural Training. Pursuing his life-long interest in the philosophy of science, Milton currently contributes to research at the Intercultural Development Research Institute, operating in the U.S. and Europe.
